Data Protection Day - 28 January 2010

The Office of the Data Protection Commissioner joins the other Data Protection authorities in
Europe to celebrate Data Protection Day for the fourth time today. This day coincides with the opening for signature of Convention 108 of the Council of Europe, entitled Convention for the Protection of Individuals with regard to Automatic Processing of Personal Data, which took place in Strasbourg in 1981. This will be an occasion for European Citizens to be made more aware of their right to privacy in terms of the protection of personal data.

To mark the day this Office has prepared informative material, including posters and ballpens (carrying a privacy message), which was distributed to school children with the objective to raise awareness amongst the younger age.  The theme of the message refers to the omnipresent privacy threats in cyberspace and the fact that the personal inforamtion posted on the Internet may be accessed every person across the globe.  A  newspaper article was also penned in one of the leading local newspapers.
